MF Husain, India's best known contemporary painter, has died in London. India should grieve for two reasons. At 95, he was active and had lots of painting left in him. And he died in exile, unhappy with the way his home country had treated him.

Husain had been in exile since 2006, when he was attacked by rightist groups angry with his portrayal of Hindu deities. Last year, he was offered Qatari citizenship. But his heart remained in India, and in interviews, spoke fondly of what this country meant to him.

CNN-IBN reported from London that he was admitted only two days ago for fluid retention in his lungs, and but had otherwise been"in fairly good health".

Arun Vadhera, a friend who visited him at Royal Brompton Hospital yesterday, said he had been cheerful, talking about eating out at a restaurant soon after his discharge. "He really really missed India a lot," he told a TV channel.

Ranking the top colleges is a very difficult task. While it is relatively easy to create clusters of colleges, it is differentiating within clusters that became the most difficult exercise. So for the first time in the country we have used balanced scorecard methodology to arrive at the ranking of the top 50 colleges. Ranking methodology: We scanned the last five year rankings of about 241 colleges and normalised their ranks, by assigning differential weights to subjective and objective ranking. Such a process is used to develop clusters of institutions. The research standing of individual institutions were further used to refine the clusters and remove the odd men out. Individual clusters were ranked serially. In each of these clusters the differences in cut-off marks, wherever possible (like in case of IITs and AIEEE institutes and some States) were used to arrive at individual ranks. Heavily dominated by public institutions, the top-50 listing is a roll call of excellence India’s top 50 engineering institutions 2011

The Tata Manza (Quadrajet Aura ABS) has clocked an incredible mileage of 46.33 km per litre.

The Tata Manza (Quadrajet Aura ABS) has clocked an incredible mileage of 46.33 km per litre. This feat has been achieved by Narayanan Menon, a resident of Coimbatore who has zoomed into the Limca Book of Records.

Narayanan R Menon, Managing Director of Aromen Engineering Company and a proud owner of the Tata Manza has been certified for the remarkable drive on the Coimbatore- Avinashi by-pass on 25th of May 2011. Menon’s Tata Manza covered a long stretch of 72.3 kilometer on road by consuming only 1.58 liters of diesel, which translates to an incredible mileage of 46.33 km per litre.

A mechanical engineer, Menon himself does not credit an amazing mileage to a ‘magic foot’ rather a combination of good driving and car maintenance. For a country where fuel efficiency is a significant factor for automobile ownership and with fuel prices increasing, the feat certainly bodes well for the mileage conscious customer.

High drama was witnessed at the AICC headquarters here today when a person posing as a journalist tried to attack party General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi with a shoe, apparently miffed over the treatment meted out to Ramdev.

The person, who was carrying an identification as Sunil Kumar of Nav-Sanchar Patrika from Rajasthan, came close to Dwivedi, removed his shoe and stopped short of hitting him with it.

The 41-year-old man was later arrested by the police under Section 107 (apprehension of breach of peace and tranquility) and Section 151 (disruption of public peace) of the CrPC.

Kumar, wearing a striped T-shirt, was heard telling Dwivedi that "you cannot stop us from asking questions."

He was immediately caught by a AICC staffer and some journalists and was removed from the briefing hall while being beaten up.

Dwivedi described the incident as "pre-planned" attack as he was to speak against Ramdev and his agitation which Congress leader said was conducted at the behest of Sangh Parivar.

"Whatever, I said has been proved by this one man. Had this (attack) not been orchestrated, the person would not have asked favourable questions so that there were no doubts," he said.

Beijing, June 3 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A teenager in China's Anhui province has sold his right kidney to buy an iPad 2. His mother, who knew nothing of his plans, now hopes to hunt down the criminals who disabled him, a media report said.

Seventeen-year-old Xiao Zheng had been dreaming of a new iPad 2 for a while, but the price was beyond his means.

Zheng found an agent ready to buy his kidney and travelled to Hunan province in central China to undergo surgery in a local hospital. With the 22,000 yen ($3,900) he was paid, Zheng bought a new iPad 2 and iPhone and then returned home, according to a report on the Dongfang TV channel Thursday.

'Xiao Zheng returned home with a computer and a new Apple phone. We do not have the money for such expensive gadgets. At first, he did not want to tell me where he got that much money from. Later he confessed he had sold his right kidney to buy these things,' his mother told the channel.

After she learned the truth, Zheng's mother travelled with her son back to the hospital, only to discover that the operating theater had been rented out for commercial use to a businessman from Fujian province. Several attempts to reach the agents failed, as their phones were switched off.

Zheng's health is deteriorating day by day, and his mother said she hopes she will be able to find the criminals who disabled her son.

While humour may not be a cure-all for all your health related problems, it is a tool which you must keep in your toolbox. Humour has been found capable of relaxing the body, easing the mind, relieving stress and boosting creativity and problem-solving capabilities.

Helen Keller, the deafblind American author, once said: “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”

And it is often said all healing is first the healing of the heart. And what better way to heal the heart than humour. Not only can humour help in alleviating of diseases, it can also work as a potent age eraser for you. Laughing like a little kid every now and then can be a great way to keep yourself young. Humour has been found capable of relaxing the body, easing the mind, relieving stress and boosting creativity and problem-solving capabilities.

While humour may not be a cure-all for all your health related problems, it is a tool which you must keep in your toolbox. It is a great way to beat the stress and make you feel better about the life. When something strikes your brain as funny, your body responds with a laugh. That simple, involuntary action can help you reap some brilliant short-term benefits, say the experts. When you have a hearty laugh, you flex, then relax, 15 facial muscles plus scores of others all over your body. Your pulse and respiration increase briefly and this oxygenates your blood. The brain, in turn, experiences a decrease in the perception of pain, possibly associated with the production of pain-killing, pleasure-giving chemicals called endorphins.

Evidence related to laughter boosting your immunity also exists. By the time you're done with laughing, your body is calmer and your brain clearer. You may even surprised to discover that headache has vanished.

While measuring of long-term effects of laughter is difficult, many doctors have started working humour into treatments. They feel that if used judiciously, laughter help patients with recovery. If nothing else, it can at least make the patient feel better for shorter durations of time. Even if you enjoy a sound health, a good sense of humour can help you deal with the stress and unpleasant circumstances in life in a better way.

Let's look at what you can do for incorporating humour in your daily life:

Look for humour in everyday life. Look for people doing funny things, or animals or children or anything that makes you laugh.

You think you are always buried under a mountain of work. But view it from a child's perspective. Do you think he would be petrified by the burdens in life? Nah!

Check your humour pulse. See what is which makes you laugh. Santa-Banta jokes, PJs, slapstick comedies or witty humour.

Make sure that you learn to you draw the line. I mean, you won't want to laugh during the funeral or a court proceeding, would you? (MensXP.com)

SYDNEY (AP) — A flight crew checking the cabin of a Qantas plane before takeoff found rats in a compartment holding medical equipment, grounding the plane for more than a day, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

Crews did a visual check of the plane Tuesday afternoon and found no more rats or any damage. The rodents had been in a cabinet holding a defibrillator. The plane returned to service Thursday morning.

Passengers had not yet boarded the Sydney-to-Brisbane flight and were instead put on another plane.

A Qantas spokeswoman called the incident "very unusual." She declined to be named, citing policy.

But Scott Connolly of the Transportation Workers Union told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio on Thursday that members have had concerns about hygiene and sanitation on Qantas flights.

The spokeswoman denied that was the case. "This is a very irregular occurrence," she said.

Qantas, Australia's national carrier, has experienced a series of troubles in recent months, including an engine explosion and forced landings.

Earlier this week, a Qantas flight from Dallas, Texas, to Australia made an unscheduled stop on a Pacific island after pilots feared they might run out of fuel because of strong headwinds. The Qantas spokeswoman said the airline was committed to the route — which is new and one of the world's longest for Boeing 747 jets.

How Do You Spell ‘cymotrichous’? No matter how you spell it, the word provides yet another feather in the cap of Indian-Americans at the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest, as Sukanya Roy became the fourth consecutive Indian-American, and the ninth Indian American to win the title in the last 12 years.

Sukanya Roy, an eighth-grader at Abington Heights Middle School, won the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, correctly spelling 'periscii' and 'cymotrichous' to win the title. She will will take home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

The ultimate test for school kids, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has been wrung into an inspiring novel, a documentary, a feature film and a Broadway musical. So what makes Indians click at contests like the Spelling Bee? Is it their penchant for the language, their ability to study by rote, or is it their desire to stand out in the crowd of immigrants that have made the US their home?

Here are a few Indian-Americans who won the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest:

Anamika Veeramani in 2010: The 14-year-old from North Royalton, Ohio, successfully spelled the words ‘Juvia’ and ‘Stromuhr’ to become the Bee’s 83rd champion. Repeating the community’s feat of 2005, when Anurag Kashyap, Aliya Deri, Samir Patel and Rajiv Tarigopula won the top four positions.

Kavya Shivshankar in 2009: Kavya Shivshankar of Olethe, Kansas, spelt the word ‘Laodicean’ to claim the title in 2009. Kavya who finished fourth in 2008, cracked words like ‘Escritoire’, ‘Hydrargyrum’, ‘Blancmange’, ‘Baignoire’, ‘Ecossaise’, ‘Diacoele’, ‘Bouquiniste’, ‘Isagoge’, and ‘Phoresy’ to win the coveted title.

Sameer Mishra in 2008: After watching his sister’s unsuccessful attempt to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Sameer Mishra set himself on a mission to win the Scripps. And he did it in style when he aced the word ‘Guerdon’ to win the 81st National Spelling Bee contest. Sameer became the first speller to win the title after misspelling his onstage word in the preliminary round.

Anurag Kashyap in 2005: Correctly spelling the word ‘Appoggiatura’, Anurag Kashyap clinched the 2005 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Anurag whizzed through relatively common words such as ‘Prosciutto’, an Italian dry-cured ham, and difficult ones such as ‘Sphygmomanometer’, an instrument for measuring blood pressure.

Sai R. Gunturi in 2003: Sai R. Gunturi, a 13-year-old from Dallas, Texas, won the 76th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee with the word ‘Pococurante’. He survived 15 rounds to emerge as the 2003 national champion. Among the words Sai spelt correctly en route to the title were ‘Marmoraceous’, ‘Mistassini’, ‘Solfeggio’, ‘Voussoir’, ‘Halogeton’, ‘Dipnoous’, ‘Peirastic’, and ‘Rhathymia’.

Pratyush Buddiga in 2002: Pratyush Buddiga won the 75th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee when he correctly spelt the word ‘Prospicience’ in the 11th round.

George Abraham Thampy in 2000: Nicknamed ‘Georgie’, George Abraham Thampy of St Louis, Missouri, spelt the word ‘Demarche’ to win the 73rd edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest. Thampy also competed in the National Geographic Bee in 2000, taking second place in that competition one week before he won the National Spelling Bee.

Nupur Lala in 1999: She spelt the word ‘Logorrhea’ to be crowned the champion of the 72nd Scripps National Spelling Bee. She edged out David Lewandowski who missed out on the word ‘Opsimath’. She was also a part of the 2002 documentary ‘Spellbound’, that followed eight competitors in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

Rageshree Ramachandran in 1988: Rageshree Ramachandran won the Bee when she was in the eighth grade – her winning word was ‘Elegiacal’. At age 15, she won a $10,000 Westinghouse Science Talent Search scholarship and always lists her championship on her resumes and applications.

Balu Natarajan in 1985: In 1985, Balu Natarajan beat out his competitors by spelling ‘Milieu’ to become an overnight sensation for the Indian-American community. Now a doctor of sports medicine, Balu Natarajan was quoted as saying, “Indian record on spelling bees gives the community quite a bit of confidence that we can do well here, much like other ethnicities pursuing the American dream.”

Just like big names from the film industry and celebrities from other walks of life, Indians who have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest have given the Indian community a reason to believe that they too can achieve a lot in a country that they migrated to and dream to live the great American life.
